St. Petersburg man, 62, identified as pilot in deadly Southwest Florida plane crash

Authorities have identified a St. Petersburg man as the pilot of a small plane that crashed into the Gulf of Mexico off Captiva Island on Wednesday.

Gregg Howard, 62, of 122 Nina St. NE drowned after the wreck, according to a Saturday news release from the Lee County Sheriff's Office. Divers with the Sheriff's Office recovered Howard's body from the wreckage and determined he was alone.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash, the statement said.
