ST. PETERSBURG — A 19-year-old man was arrested Tuesday and accused of taking part in the Oct. 21 robbery, beating, shooting and carjacking of Gene Carter, according to police.
Lashaud “Rowdy” Golden faces charges of attempted murder, carjacking with a deadly weapon and being a delinquint in possession of a firearm.
The incident took place just after midnight on Oct. 21 in the 300 block of 35th Street S, police said. Police said Golden flagged down Carter, whom he knew, in an attempt to buy marijuana. Carter, 44, told Golden he had nothing to sell him. Golden then pulled out a 9mm handgun and demanded Carter give him money, police said.
A second suspect, whom police are still trying to identify, opened the driver’s door, pulled Carter out and started beating him. Golden kept Carter at gunpoint as the other suspect stole $200 in cash from the car, police said.
Carter tried to run from his assailants. Golden opened fire and shot Carter three times in the back, police said. He is expected to recover from his injuries.
Golden and the other man drove away in Carter’s car, police said, and left it burning in an alley near 3518 28th St. N.
Carter’s brother later spotted Golden in a store at 15th Avenue S and 49th Street and called police. Officers arrested Golden on Tuesday, and police said Carter identified him as one of the men who assaulted him.
Golden was being held without bail in the Pinellas County jail.
