St. Petersburg man charged in New Port Richey stabbing

NEW PORT RICHEY – One man was arrested Friday night after he slashed another man with a pocket knife during an argument, Pasco deputies say.

Phillip Lawson was arguing with the other man outside the Walgreens at 1841 Little Road just before 9 p.m., a Pasco County Sheriff's Office report states. The report did not specify what the argument was about, but said at some point Lawson pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed the other man several times in the left arm and left side of his body.

Lawson, 41, then turned to a friend and asked her to hide the knife, the report said. When she wouldn't do it, he tried to shove it into her purse, then ditched the knife in some nearby bushes, where deputies found it, the report said.

He told them he had used his knife, but in self-defense.

The other man was taken to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point for treatment.

Deputies searched Lawson, the report states, and found two Dilaudid pills in his pocket.

Lawson, of St. Petersburg, was arrested on charges of aggravated battery and possession of a controlled substance. He remained Monday in the Land O'Lakes jail in lieu of $52,000 bail.
