A St. Petersburg man died from his injuries late Monday night after the trailer being hauled behind a pickup truck struck the wheelchair he was pushing across 34th Street N, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

George Fletcher Ball, 64, was crossing 34th Street N mid-block near the 1700 block from west to east. When he entered the median, Ball stopped but the wheelchair he was pushing stuck out in the northbound traffic lanes, police said.

A 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, driven by James Fraser, was heading northbound on 34th Street N. The truck attempted to swerve around the wheelchair but the 16-foot trailer it was pulling struck the chair, pushing it into Ball, police said.

Ball taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, where he died, police said.

An investigation is ongoing.
