WESLEY CHAPEL — All but one lane is open on southbound Interstate 75 in Pasco County after authorities closed a portion of the highway when a suspect fleeing a traffic stop was hit by a car, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The southbound lanes at Mile Marker 277, near the rest area, were closed around 10:30 a.m. Thursday for about an hour, according to Sgt. Steve Gaskins, a spokesman for the patrol.

The traffic stop involved a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent who stopped a minivan. Five people fled from the car, Gaskins said. Four ran into the woods along the interstate but one ran across the highway and was struck by a Ford Mustang.

The victim was airlifted to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa in serious condition.

Troopers, Pasco County sheriff's deputies and border patrol agents continued searching for the remaining occupants of the vehicle.
