TAMPA — Police have released more details in the motorcycle crash that left one man dead as heavy traffic was streaming out of South Tampa after Saturday's Gasparilla Pirate Fest.

About 6:30 p.m., two men on a 2009 Harley-Davidson were heading west on Cleveland Street near Magnolia Avenue.

Driver Kyle John Viticonte, 23, of Ormond Beach, noticed traffic was stopped and began to brake but lost control, police said. The motorcycle slid on the ground.

The rider on the back of the motorcycle, Matthew Heilman, 24, of New York, struck his head. He died Sunday at Tampa General Hospital, police said.

Viticonte was in serious but stable condition and was recovering from surgery at Tampa General Hospital, police say.

Detectives have not been able to interview him yet. They say it is unclear so far where the men were before the crash.
