ZEPHYRHILLS — A 25-year-old woman died after her car was struck twice during a three-vehicle crash Wednesday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Destiny Grooms of Tampa died from her injuries after she was airlifted to St. Joseph's Hospital.
Here's how troopers described the incident:
Timothy Hurtt, 32, of Zephyrhills, was driving a 2001 Mitsubishi SUV north on U.S. 301 about 6:25 a.m. Wednesday, approaching Chancey Road.
In front of him, Grooms was driving a 2011 Nissan Altima.
As Grooms slowed to turn into Zephyrhills Correctional Institution on Gall Boulevard, Hurtt failed to slow and hit the back of Groom's vehicle, troopers said.
The Nissan was sent into the path of another Nissan, driven by 32-year-old Adrian Vazquez Gonzalez of Tampa. Gonzalez was driving south on U.S. 301 and collided with Grooms, flipping Grooms' vehicle in the middle of the highway, the Highway Patrol said.
All lanes of the highway were closed until 8 a.m.
Hurtt and Gonzalez received minor injuries, troopers said. The three drivers were wearing seatbelts and alcohol was not a factor in the crash, troopers said. The collision was still under investigation.
