TAMPA — A 36-year-old Thonotosassa man was killed Friday when he collided nearly head on with a car, authorities said.

Tommy Lee Hill was riding a Kawasaki Ninja east on East Hillsborough Avenue near Carmack Road about 6:15 a.m. when the crash happened. As he tried to pass slower eastbound traffic at a high rate of speed, Hill collided nearly head-on with a Chevrolet sedan heading west, troopers said.

Hill was thrown from the bike and landed in the eastbound lane. He died at the scene.

The driver of the Chevrolet, 40-year-old Fernando Castellanos Cendales of Lakeland, was not injured.

Authorities closed both lanes of Hillsborough Avenue for about five hours for the crash investigation.
