A 37-year-old man died early Sunday in East Lake after the driver of the car he was riding in lost control, hit a light pole then struck a tree, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The driver, Kyle Stevens Birdyshaw, 25, of New Port Richey, was driving a Ford Focus northbound on East Lake Road near Pasado Drive about 4:47 a.m. Troopers said he lost control for an unknown reason and veered off the roadway.
Birdyshaw then over-corrected, traveling back across the roadway and into the median. The car rotated before hitting a pole, then a tree, troopers said.
Both Birdyshaw and passenger Ruel Depante Ramos, also of New Port Richey, were transported to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point in Hudson, where Ramos later died. Birdyshaw suffered serious injuries, troopers said.
