TAMPA — The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two missing jet skiers on Thursday night after they went missing near the Gandy Bridge.

Just after 8:30 p.m. Coast Guard watch standers in the St. Petersburg sector got a transferred 911 call from Hillsborough County: a jet skier saying two others had gone missing.

One of the jet skis became disabled near the Gandy Bridge and the caller had left to go to shore for a towline. When that skier came back, the other two were missing.

A Jayhawk helicopter crew located the lost skiers in the bay and helped rescue boats locate them by 9:45 p.m.

The Coast Guard said the incident is a reminder of why any on-board vessel should be equipped with a radio to call for help and communicate with others in a group.
