TARPON SPRINGS — A U.S. Coast Guard crew rescued a 17-year-old girl adrift offshore in a kayak Sunday night.

Relatives reported the girl missing when they became separated from her on a kayaking trip about 6 p.m. She later told rescuers that she had been struck by the wake of a boat and had lost her paddle.

Four hours later, according to the Coast Guard, a crew from a helicopter spotted her in the kayak, bobbing in the water roughly northwest of Honeymoon Island State Park. Searchers plucked her out of the water by boat.

The girl appeared to be suffering from mild hypothermia, according to the Coast Guard. The agency did not identify her.

No further information was immediately available.
