Grief at holidays gets new attention at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church

On Dec. 7, St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Sun City Center will open its doors to those struggling with grief and other difficulties this holiday season.

From 2008 to 2013, the church hosted an annual service, When Christmas Hurts, offering comfort and prayer to any in need.

The event took a break last year following the passing of its original organizer, Judy Weiffenbach.

This season Rev. Paulette Carney of St. John the Divine decided to bring back the service.

Carney, 69, connects personally with the gathering. Her mother passed just days before Christmas 40 years ago. For some time, she struggled to cope during what most consider a joyful time.

"I didn't have anywhere to process my feelings," she said. "I told my husband it was like a part of me was gone."

Carney said she wants others to know its okay to feel sad and express those emotions, even during the "most wonderful time of the year."

"I wish I had something like this then," Carney said. "These days more people are learning it's okay to give a voice to what you are feeling."

About 50 people attended the 2013 When Christmas Hurts service. Some came to mourn a loved one. Others lit a candle for embattled relatives.

More are anticipated this year, Carney said. No one will be turned away.

At the event, no matter the reason, people need not hide their holiday blues.

"There are so many people struggling this time of year, whether they are dealing with grief or a divorce or another life change," Carney said. "We will have a series of prayers, thoughtful music and time for offering support. We want to help people. We aren't there to take away the pain but to bring them hope."

When Christmas Hurts begins at 7 p.m. Dec. 7 at the church, 1015 Del Webb Blvd. E, Sun City Center. For more information, visit stjohndivine.com or call (813) 633-3970.
