School news: College financial aid seminars

Get up to speed on college financial aid

The Pinellas County School District continues a series of seminars this month aimed at helping parents and college-bound students better understand the financial aid process. The seminars will offer information on Florida Bright Futures, where to find scholarships, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as FAFSA, and basics about applying to college. The sessions will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the following schools: Tarpon Springs High, Oct. 14; Gibbs High, Oct. 16; Northeast High, Oct. 21; Countryside High, Oct. 28 and Osceola High, Oct. 30. Call the schools for exact locations of the meetings.

Fair allows volunteers to sign up with ease

The Pinellas school system is inviting the public to a Mentor Recruitment Fair from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at the Feather Sound Country Club, 2201 Feather Sound Drive, St. Petersburg. Attendees can register to volunteer, obtain background screening, attend a one-hour mentor workshop and be matched with a student at the school of their choice. "Mentors truly do change lives, and even a small investment of time can provide a lifetime of rewards," said Michelle Roberge, the school district's coordinator of Family and Community Relations. To register for the fair, call Roberge at (727) 588-5050 or email robergem@pcsborg.

Survey gives top ranking to foundation

The Pinellas Education Foundation is the No. 1 K-12 education foundation in the country, according to a new study by Dewey & Associates, a Tampa-based management and strategy consulting firm. The study reviewed foundations in the largest school districts in the nation, focusing on eight indicators: annual revenues, revenues per student, total assets, assets per student, investment income, total program expenses, expenses per student and volunteers. Pinellas was one of 12 Florida districts with foundations in the top 50. The Hillsborough County foundation came in at No. 6 and Pasco at No. 38.
