Ruth’s List Florida, a statewide political advocacy group that backs pro-choice women for political office, has endorsed St. Petersburg City Council member Darden Rice in the mayor’s race.

The endorsement could mean a fundraising boost for Rice, already the frontrunner in raising campaign cash in the race.

Ruth’s List, whose board lists prominent Tampa Bay political insiders including Erin Aebel, Alex Sink and Arthenia Joyner, notifies its members of its endorsements and encourages them to contribute to the candidates.

Lucy Sedgwick, the group’s CEO, said the endorsements sometimes result in “hundreds” of contributions.

Scott resigns as Pinellas Democratic chair

Pinellas County Democratic Party Chair Barbara Scott is resigning her position due to personal and health reasons that will prevent her from devoting full energy to the job, she said this week.

“No drama, no story,” she said. “In fairness to the party, you need a leader who can devote full time to it, and I have some health issues I need to take care of.”

Scott said party officials will set a date “shortly” for an election to replace her. She intends to remain active in the party and doesn’t currently have a favorite candidate for her replacement.

Scott was elected in 2018 and re-elected without opposition in November.
