ST. PETERSBURG — A 97-year-old St. Petersburg man died Monday at a hospital where he had been taken after he ran a yield sign and collided with another car, St. Petersburg police said.

The crash happened Sunday at the intersection of 54th Avenue S and Dolphin Cay Lane S.

Thomas Franklin Thompson Jr. was headed south on Dolphin Cay Lane in a 2016 Subaru sport utility vehicle when he entered the path of a 2011 Hyundai sedan headed west on 54th Avenue S, police said.

Thompson had only minor injuries when he was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, but he later died there, police said. Neither the driver of the Hyundai nor passengers in the two cars were taken to the hospital.
