Man hit, killed while crossing Central Avenue in St. Petersburg

The driver who hit the man “initially fled the scene,” police said in a news release, but was followed by a witness and later returned to the site of the crash.

A 67-year-old man who was hit by an SUV last week on Central Avenue in St. Petersburg has died, St. Petersburg police reported on Monday.

John Cowie was walking across Central Avenue from south to north near 25th Street at about 9 p.m. Thursday when he was hit by a black 2018 Chevy SUV that was westbound on Central.

The SUV driver “initially fled the scene,” police said in a news release, but was followed by a witness and later returned to the site of the crash.

Cowie was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, where he died on Friday.

Police did not release the name of the SUV driver and said an investigation remains active.
