Check out renderings of the Rays’ new stadium in St. Petersburg

We’re several years away from a proper first look at the Tampa Bay Rays’ proposed $1.3 billion replacement for Tropicana Field, announced Tuesday in a news conference with St. Petersburg and Pinellas County leaders.

But in new renderings and images from the team’s original response to the city’s request for proposals for the 86-acre Tropicana Field site, we can get a sense of how the Rays and co-developers Hines see things.

For reference, here’s an overhead view of the Tropicana Field site from Google Earth. The new stadium would go in the current Trop parking lot. Developers would erect a parking garage in order to give fans coming to games over the next three seasons a way to get to the stadium. Once complete, the development will have 14,000 parking spaces.

The stadium itself would seat about 30,000 under a fixed pavilion-style roof, with windows that could open to let in the breeze on days when it isn’t too hot or rainy.

Outside the stadium would be walkways and promenades filled with shops, restaurants and other fan activities.

The stadium is the centerpiece of the Rays-Hines proposal. It would also include 4,800 market-rate residences and 1,200 affordable and workforce housing units; about 600 of the latter would be located off-site. It would have 1.4 million square feet of office space, 750,000 square feet of retail space, a 100,000-square-foot conference center and 750-room hotel.

The plans also call for a new 100,000-square-foot concert and entertainment that would seat between 3,000 and 4,000, as well as 50,000 square feet of cultural and community space, including a new Woodson African American Museum of Florida. While the plan’s early renderings are subject to change, you can see a glimpse of the concert venue toward the center of the photo below.
