ST. PETERSBURG — Organizers have canceled the annual illuminated night parade that normally would have kicked off this month's Grand Prix events. Instead, the Suncoasters of St. Petersburg are planning an entirely new celebration for the fall: an arts festival co-sponsored by the city. For years, the Suncoasters hosted the Festival of States event each year, and that changed to a night parade just before the auto race in recent years. Suncoasters president Bob Lang told the Tampa Bay Times that parade organizers came to an agreement with city officials that there may be a better way for the group to celebrate St. Petersburg, which is its original mission. The Suncoasters are now working on a weeklong festival in September dubbed SPF15.
