Man found with fatal gunshot wound in Tampa’s University area

TAMPA — The death of a man who was found fatally shot inside his SUV early Sunday is now under investigation, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

The man was discovered just before 1 a.m. in the area of 131st Avenue E and 15th Street N. Deputies were sent to the area after several 911 callers reported hearing gunshots in the area, just outside Haley Park in the University area.

Some of the 911 callers reported that a person had been shot, the Sheriff’s office said.

When deputies arrived, they said they found a wounded man sitting inside a dark-colored SUV with a gunshot to his upper body. Paramedics arrived, rendered medical aid and took the man to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

The Sheriff’s Office said his death does not appear to be a random act and the agency does not believe the public to be in any danger. However, deputies released no other details about the case, including the name of the name or whether any suspects have been identified.
