15-year-old injured in Labor Day lightning strike, state officials say

TAMPA — A 15-year-old teen was the person who was injured Monday in a lightning strike while operating a personal watercraft near the Davis Island Yacht Club, authorities say.

Mason Ryan Salustro was hospitalized after the Labor Day incident, according to the the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Officials did not release any information about his medical condition on Tuesday.

Salustro is a student at Jesuit High School, according to his social media accounts.

The teen was operating an 11-foot Sea-Doo personal watercraft when he was injured, officials said.

Tampa Fire Rescue said the incident took place at 3:40 p.m. and the teen was taken to Tampa General Hospital for medical treatment.

The wildlife commission said the incident remains under investigation.
