Pedestrian killed by vehicle in downtown Tampa, police say

TAMPA — A pedestrian was hit and killed by a vehicle in downtown on Saturday evening, police say.

The crash took place about 5:51 p.m. at the intersection of N Ashley Drive and E Whiting Street, near the Tampa Riverwalk and the downtown Wells Fargo building, according to Tampa police.

The pedestrian was taken to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead. Police did not say what type of vehicle struck the pedestrian.

The intersection was shutdown for several hours Saturday as investigators examined the crash scene. Motorists should avoid that area.

Tampa police did not release any other details about the crash, including the names of those involved. The investigation is ongoing, police say.
