TAMPA — A 38-year-old woman was killed Wednesday when her car crashed into a New Tampa pond, police said.

The crash happened near the intersection of Whispering Brook Drive and Clover Pine Drive when the car left the road, struck some trees, overturned and became partially submerged in the pond, according to Tampa police.

Police officers were able to help rescue a 12-year-old girl riding in the car. Officers and Tampa Fire Rescue crews were not able to free the driver because the car continued to sink into the pond, according to police. She was found dead inside when the car was pulled from the pond.

Police have not released the names of the driver or the passenger.
