TAMPA — Just as fans are flocking to Tampa Bay sports bars with winning streaks by hockey’s Lightning and baseball’s Rays, a fire blamed on smoking has shut one of them down for a while.

Tampa Fire Rescue was called just after 10 p.m. Monday about a mulch fire outside Duffy’s Sports Grill, 1580 N Dale Mabry Hwy. near Interstate 275.

Crews determined that the fire had spread into a front wall and they extinguished it, Tampa Fire Rescue said. An investigator determined that the fire started in a mulch area where a cigarette receptacle had been placed and blamed it on “improperly discarded smoking material.”

The fire caused about $85,000 damage to the building and contents, mainly to the facade around the front entrance and from minor smoke and water damage in the rest of the building, Tampa Fire Rescue said.

The fire was under control at 11 p.m. There were no injuries.

An employee at Duffy’s said the restaurant will be closed a few days for repairs.

The Dale Mabry restaurant and one in Sarasota are the Florida chain’s only locations in the Tampa Bay area, according to its website.
