The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a shooting that occurred inside a sport-utility vehicle on the Howard Frankland Bridge Friday morning.
Troopers said a man in his 20s suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was a passenger in the vehicle with another man in his 20s. Both men are from Marco Island, troopers said.
The Highway Patrol said the injured man was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where he died Friday night. The shooting occurred while the SUV was stopped along the shoulder. Troopers were called to the scene about 11:15 a.m.
The northbound outside lane and emergency shoulder near Milepost 35 were closed for several hours while troopers investigated, but in a news release issued shortly after 7:30 p.m. Friday, the Highway Patrol said all travel lanes had reopened.
