A 60-year-old man has died after experiencing a medical episode and crashing on S Dale Mabry Highway on Tuesday, according to the Tampa Police Department.

The man was driving a work dump truck northbound when he left the roadway around 9:29 a.m., striking a TECO pole and then a cement light pole, police said in a news release Wednesday afternoon.

After hitting the poles, the dump truck drove across some grass at a Verizon store located at 714 S Dale Mabry Highway, crossed the intersection at Swann Avenue and struck a vehicle that was parked in the South Beach parking lot before coming to a stop, the news release said.

The driver was unconscious when found. He was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The crash caused power outages in the area, and the roadway was closed for several hours while crews restored power.
