Tampa’s Grand Hyatt hotel evacuated after small fire

Nine people were taken to the hospital for “minor medical concerns” after the fire broke out Friday morning, a Tampa Fire Rescue spokesperson said.

Crews evacuated the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay hotel in Tampa and took nine people to the hospital after a small fire broke out on an upper floor Friday morning, officials said.

Tampa Fire Rescue responded about 6:25 a.m. to a call about a fire on the 11th floor of the hotel at 2900 Bayport Drive and evacuated the building, according to department. Crews evacuated the building, extinguished the fire in about 30 minutes and then worked to clear out smoke from multiple floors.

Nine people were taken to the hospital for “minor medical concerns,” said Tampa Fire Rescue spokesperson Vivian Shedd.

By 9 a.m., guests were being allowed to return to some lower floors of the hotel, Shedd said.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Friday.
