TEEN WHO SURVIVED STOLEN SUV CRASH TO BE HELD IN JUVENILE DETENTION
Slumped in a wheelchair in a corner of the courtroom, gauze wrapped around his head, wrist and hand, Keondrae Brown, the only survivor of a fiery stolen car crash that killed his brother and two friends early Sunday, appeared before a judge for the first time Tuesday on a charge of grand theft auto. Judge Kathleen Hessinger ordered the 14-year-old held for the maximum 21 days in the Juvenile Detention Center.
MAN WHO KILLED CROSSING GUARD IN CRASH SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS
Julious Johnson, charged with causing a crash that killed a Clearwater crossing guard on Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard three years ago, pleaded guilty Tuesday morning and was sentenced to 18 years in prison. On May 20, 2014, Douglas Carey, a former Clearwater police officer, was getting ready to escort children across the busy intersection at Belcher Road when a Cadillac collided with another car and barreled toward him, hurling him into the air and onto the pavement of a gas station, police said at the time. Johnson, with his mangled Cadillac blocking the street, ran away, leaving his injured daughters, ages 2 and 4, behind in the car.
