Hillsborough MPO holds Southshore transit meeting

Hillsborough MPO will hold an open house from 5:30-7 p.m. on Thursday (Sept. 13) at the SouthShore Regional Library, 15816 Beth Shields Way in Ruskin. The open house will cover the SouthShore Transit Study reevaluation.

All residents who want better transit services are invited to participate in this public meeting. The purpose of the study is to analyze possible improvements to the transit service in the SouthShore area.

This study serves as an update to the SouthShore transit study conducted in 2014. Hillsborough MPO will reevaluate the current transit needs for the communities of Apollo, Beach, Boyette, Gibsonton, Riverview, Ruskin, Sun City Center and Wimauma.

Improvements will focus on opportunities such as on-demand service, public-private partnerships and the efforts of non-profit organizations and others.

The 2014 study developed transit priorities for the SouthShore area and HART underwent an overhaul of their transit system known as Mission MAX, which decreased service in the SouthShore area. HART requested that the MPO reevaluate the previous study and update based on the needs of the community, culminating in updated costs and a phased implementation plan. The revaluation began in May 2018.

The new study will evaluate growth in the area and provide input.
