Construction and holiday events will complicate traffic in Pinellas

Published Dec. 12, 2014

Just in time for the holidays:

• The final phase of the Bryan Dairy Road/Starkey Road intersection improvement project is in motion — nighttime milling and resurfacing means lane closures, detours and significant delays from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Resurfacing is scheduled to be wrapped up Dec. 19 and the completion date on the project, which began in April 2013, is set for Dec. 30.

• The scheduled resurfacing of 38th Avenue N from the southbound Interstate 275 on-ramp to Haines Road began this week and is scheduled to last until Dec. 24. Motorists should expect daytime lane closures and delays.

• Various special events will close some roads, a few travel lanes, or simply slow traffic around the county this weekend. Here's a rundown:

Dunedin: The city's annual Old Fashioned Christmas and Holiday Parade will close roads downtown beginning at 6 a.m. Saturday until midnight. The street parade begins at 4 p.m. on Douglas Avenue, and will run from Beltrees Street to Monroe Street. The Old Fashioned Christmas event will take place along Main Street and Broadway Avenue until 9 p.m. Road closures include Main Street from Broadway to Louden Avenue; Virginia Lane at Douglas Avenue and Main Street; other roads will have lane closures from 2 to 8 p.m. Check the city's website for information.

Palm Harbor's holiday parade will close Florida Avenue from 11th Street to Omaha Street (County Road 1), Nebraska Avenue from Omaha Street to Belcher Road, Omaha Street from Florida Avenue to Nebraska Avenue, and 11th Street from Michigan Avenue to Florida Avenue from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

In Clearwater, the Suncoast Brotherhood motorcycle rights group's annual toy run will hit the road on Dec. 21, departing from the Kmart parking lot on State Road 580/Main Street with police escort. The route is south onto the service road; south to Countryside Boulevard; right on Oak Neck Road; right on Belcher Road; left on Main Street/State Road 580); right on Broadway; left on Wilson Street; ending at American Legion Post 275, 360 Wilson St., Dunedin. No roads will be closed, but expect lots of motorcycles on the road, delays, and congestion in the area from noon until about 6 p.m.

Also in Clearwater, the westbound lane of Cleveland Street from Fort Harrison to Osceola Avenue will be closed from 1 to 7 p.m. Dec. 21 for the Santa 'n Suds 5K Run/Walk race. Traffic will be directed through the area by law enforcement.
