Massive hole in the street closes section of Bearss Ave

TAMPA — A massive hole in the street has closed both westbound lanes of Bearss Avenue between 12th Street N and 148th Avenue, the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office said.

The hole is about 6 feet deep and 5 feet in diameter, sheriff's office spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. It's unclear what caused the hole to form and whether it is a sinkhole, depression or pothole.

Deputies are diverting traffic through a nearby neighborhood. County maintenance is in charge of repairing the hole, Carter said.
