ST. PETERSBURG — A water main break forced authorities to close a stretch of 31st Street S near Maximo Elementary early Saturday.
An 8-inch reclaimed water pipe broke near the corner of 31st Street and 50th Avenue South, causing a hole roughly 30 feet wide and six feet deep to form near the intersection, said public works administrator Mike Connors. The gushing water forced dirt onto 31st Street, prompting police to close a stretch of the road that extended for several blocks, Connors said.
Crews had the pipe repaired by mid-morning. There is no apparent damage to the road, and a street sweeper was expected to arrive by noon to remove the dirt, Connors said. He expected the road to reopen by 1 p.m.
