ORLANDO — A University of Central Florida fraternity has been suspended after a video handed over to the school showed a fraternity member making offensive remarks about rape.
According to an incident report filed with the school, a woman who is not a student filmed a video that captured a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity chanting "Rape! Rape!" and other offensive remarks on June 9 on one of the fraternity's off-campus apartments. The member was among four fraternity members who had just returned from a bar.
The Orlando Sentinel (reports the woman gave the video to a UCF student, who gave it to the school.
A hearing will be held Thursday. The fraternity is charged with sexual misconduct for condoning or encouraging acts of sexual misconduct, a UCF letter says.
If they are found in violation of university policy, they could face punishments that include anything from community service or writing a paper to being expelled.
The national fraternity said it was investigating the UCF chapter about potential alcohol violations when it learned of the sexual misconduct allegations. The student was suspended immediately pending further investigation.
"The words used by people in the recordings are disrespectful, despicable and vile. The fraternity and university are investigating the recordings," executive director Brad Beacham said in a statement.
Sigma Nu leaders declined further comment citing the state attorney's ongoing investigation but said they are willing to help authorities and will take action if violations are found.
The incident comes just a few months after a University of Florida fraternity made national headlines in April after witnesses said Zeta Beta Tau members were urinating and vomiting off of balconies, and spitting on and insulating a group of disabled military veterans at a Panama City Beach resort. In addition, bottles and other objects were thrown from the hotel's balconies.
Three of its members were expelled. A police investigation found the members behaved badly but did not have malicious intent.
The situation occurred while the fraternity and veterans with the Warrior Beach Retreat were at the Laketown Wharf Resort in April. The veterans were there for an annual retreat meant to honor their service, and the fraternity had a social function.
