Remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal to increase rain chances in Florida

Remnants of the storm formerly known as Chantal have devolved near the Bahamas into a tropical wave – a low-pressure system still capable of delivering strong winds and heavy rains, forecasters said.

The system has a 30 percent of developing back into a tropical cyclone, according to the National Hurricane Center. Regardless, it could bring rain to Florida this weekend, said Bay News 9 meteorologist Juli Marquez.

She said the heaviest precipitation appeared to be moving north toward the Bahamas early Thursday morning. But Tropical Storm Chantal's remnants will bring increased moisture to Florida, and combined with a couple other factors, that means heightened chances for rain in Tampa Bay this weekend.

"It's going to be up to at least 60 percent over the weekend," she said of the probability for wet weather on Saturday and Sunday.
