Sunshine Skyway now closed in advance of Hurricane Irma

Published Sep. 9, 2017

The Sunshine Skyway bridge has closed in response to sustained winds of at least 40 mph in advance of Hurricane Irma.

The Florida Highway Patrol made the decision after receiving several wind reports from the Department of Transportation. The bridge will be closed until further notice.

Motorists should continue to monitor the status of bridges around the Tampa Bay region. The Highway Patrol has already indicated that it likely will close the Howard Frankland and Gandy bridges in advance of the storm, which is expected to pass nearby packing strong hurricane force winds.
