OF Kevin Kiermaier, who made his dramatic major-league debut in Game 163 last season, is being called to join the Rays in Cincinnati, the Times has learned.
The Rays opted to add an extra position player for at least the first two games of the NL rules series, and Kiermaier gives them added flexibility as a left-handed hitter who can run, and play extraordinary defense.
They are expected to make another move for Sunday's game, either calling up LHP Erik Bedard to start or adding a reliever and having LHP Cesar Ramos start.
INF Vince Belnome would have been another possibility, but he was called up for one day last week and can't be called up again for 10 days unless he is replacing an injured player. The roster spot is open because LHP Jeff Beliveau (who had replaced injured Matt Moore) was sent down.
