Democrat compliments Republican

The pandemic hit Florida prisons hard. A bill would let some sick inmates out early | Feb. 5

It is rare indeed that I find cause to praise a Republican state legislator, but there are times when you must give the devil his due. Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, has introduced a bill to allow the Department of Corrections to consider releasing elderly and ill inmates that pose little or no risk to society. Not only is this a humane act in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, but according to the non-profit research institute Florida TaxWatch, the move could save taxpayers about $21 million if fully implemented. While I disagree with Sen. Brandes on many issues, this is one deserving of compliment.

More urban farms

Among the apartment and office blocks of downtown Tampa something edible grows | Feb. 8

Excited, enthusiastic, wholesome, genuine, healthy and smart! Joe Dalessio, manager and co-owner of the Meacham farm in downtown Tampa, is what’s right with our millennial generation. The wholesome food he and his team produce will feed malnourished residents in the surrounding neighborhood. The Tampa Bay region needs more partnerships like this to feed hungry families who live in poverty, while providing scrumptious organic delights for local gourmet restaurant chefs. Any mayors out there got an empty lot?

More Super Bowl firsts

Let’s make the whole region Champa Bay | Editorial, Feb. 9

There were so many records broken and “firsts” that occurred during Super Bowl 55, including the oldest quarterback to win. I’ll add one more: For the first time in my life I couldn’t wait for The Weeknd to be over!
