“Woke” to the danger
Florida lawmakers pass bill targeting diversity programs at universities | May 3
Think about the definition of the words diversity, equity and inclusion. Each word either describes American society (diverse) or what have always been implied principles of America as embodied in our Constitution (equitable and inclusive). But now, the Gov. Ron DeSantis-inspired Florida Legislature will outlaw these goals in regard to Florida’s universities — the quintessential communities of diversity. It’s now official: Look elsewhere for a meaningful, enriching — and diverse — college experience.

Please don’t go
Stay or go? | May 3
The fact that a great teacher has to self-censor the books in his classroom is a chilling example of the corrosive effect of so-called “liberty” surveillance of our education system. Teachers from kindergarten through university must be asking themselves the same questions. We can only hope that leaving Florida for Oregon or elsewhere is not the answer. So, please stay. We need good teachers, and we need students who appreciate the dedication our teachers and professors have.

Ballot in hand, not drink in face
Woman hurls glass of wine at GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz in Florida, cops say | May 3
I would suggest to people that a better way to deal with a politician you don’t like would be to vote against them instead of throwing your drink at them. Probably cheaper also.

A bore in ‘24
Biden announces 2024 reelection bid: ‘Let’s finish this job’ | April 25
As a registered independent, I see Democrats headed for disaster in 2024. President Joe Biden has been a good public servant all these years, but now is the time to clock out, and he should take Vice President Kamala Harris with him and let someone else come to the aid of the Democratic Party. There is no excitement in the party. It is time for a huge shake-up on the ticket. It needs major invigoration.

Are more parental controls ahead for Hillsborough County libraries? | May 7
So what is next? You have children under 12 wear badges to identify them? It’s time for Hillsborough County commissioners to step back and reexamine exactly what they want to achieve. I believe that we deserve better from our elected officials.
