Wising up about smart phones

A history of what we worship | Editorial cartoon, May 5

I just completed a spiritual “self-care” 90-day program before Easter, which also covered the 40 days of Lent. One component of the journey was called “asceticism,” which is severe self-discipline and avoidance of all forms of indulgence. One asceticism was to “only use mobile devices for essential communications; cut out non-essential texting, app and internet use.” Most of the men who were with me during the 90-day journey mentioned that limiting mobile devices was one of the most difficult, but most rewarding, redirecting of their lives.

Florida lawmakers pass bill targeting diversity programs at universities | May 3

The bill prohibiting diversity, equity and inclusion programs in state universities is supposed to stop exclusion and shutting down debate, but of course it will do the opposite for anyone different from what the GOP considers normal. DEI brings together people of different backgrounds, cultures, religions, identities and more — and perhaps this is the problem for the GOP. This diversity allows our young people to meet, talk to and learn from people different from them, to expand their horizons. When young people go to college and learn things that are different than they were taught at home, many conservatives claim indoctrination. It’s not. It’s called learning about the outside world.

The real state I was in

Mr. Rogers’ neighborhood, and Gov. DeSantis’, too | Letter, May 3

A letter writer suggested that Gov. Ron DeSantis either didn’t know much about western Pennsylvania or hadn’t spent much time there. I couldn’t agree more. I was born and raised in western Pennsylvania in a working class Irish-Italian family. In the 1960s and ‘70s everyone I knew had a family member employed in a steel mill or a manufacturing plant that used the steel. They came from families like mine who were Italian, Irish, Polish, Greek and Eastern European. Our families worked hard for a living. They did not go to Yale and Harvard. Our parents taught us to be kind and respectful to everyone. DeSantis spends his time putting up barriers and targeting diversity programs. The definition of diversity is “people of different social and ethnic backgrounds…” That is western Pennsylvania. I’m afraid he doesn’t get it and he never will.
