They didn’t ‘choose’ to be gay or transgender | Letters
Here’s what readers are saying in Tuesday’s letters to the editor.
Guests visiting from St. Petersburg wear red shirts while gathering for a group picture at Cinderella Castle at the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista on Saturday. Although not sanctioned by Disney as an official park event, the wearing of red shirts at the Magic Kingdom on the first Saturday in June is a guests-generated tradition dating back to 1991 to show support for the LGBTQ+ community during national Pride Month, which kicked off Thursday.

Disney welcomes Gay Days as feud with Gov. Ron DeSantis rages on | June 5

Kudos to Disney for continuing to welcome the annual Gay Days celebration. I find it so unfortunate that Gov. Ron DeSantis and others have targeted the LGBTQ+ community. Do they really believe that persons who are LGBTQ+ woke up one morning and decided they wanted to be gay or transgender?

Public, not private

DeSantis supporter joins school board race | June 4

I think that school board candidates whose children attend private or religious schools should stick to making decisions about these schools, not public ones. They should not be running for school board. They have already shown their disapproval of public schools by choosing not to let their children attend them. I fear that imposing their religious and right-wing beliefs are their true goal. Public schools should support candidates who support teaching diversity, empathy for others and a true picture of our history and culture.

Sinking high-rises?

Parts of the US are sinking | June 4

Science experiment: How many high-rises would it take to sink St. Petersburg and Tampa? Don’t know, but we will soon.

None of the above

Making your vote count as an independent | Column, June 4

As a registered NPA voter, it is often the case where I cannot hold my nose tightly enough to vote for either of the candidates from the two major parties. It is impossible to vote when using both hands to hold my nose. I have voted for third-party candidates who I know have no chance of winning but simply voted for them in protest. Maybe we need a ”none of the above.” I wonder what would happen if “none of the above” won?

Third parties are viable

Making your vote count as an independent | Column, June 4

As Green Party of Florida co-chairperson and U.S. Green Party co-founder I strongly disagree with columnist Dave Anderson that folks should not vote for a U.S. third party. Libertarians and especially Greens are viable options in the United States. With Florida in the political spotlight again, I think that the Tampa Bay Times should increase coverage of third parties, not the opposite.
