A Gator fan backs the Noles

13 teams couldn’t beat FSU, but 13 faceless administrators just did | Column, Dec. 4

As a lifetime Florida Gator fan, I probably should not be writing this letter. But an injustice was done on Sunday. The College Football Playoff Selection Committee broke the hearts of the Florida State Seminoles and their fans by making a subjective decision about which teams make the playoffs. They dismissed all of the standard criteria. The Seminoles overcame great adversity to finish their season undefeated. No one seemed to like the computer picking the teams for the playoffs at the inception of the system. But at least the computer used stats, wins and losses to mathematically sort out who the top four teams should be. FSU would be in the playoffs if this system had been used. It is hard to fathom that two teams with one loss each made the grade but the undefeated, conference champion Noles got shut out. The FSU players should hold their heads high and know that they were cheated out of what they earned on the field. But I believe that in the future, their sails will be filled with the winds of destiny and a day of reckoning will come.

Harris dashes to Dubai for summit | Nov. 27

Four hundred world diplomats, including Vice President Kamala Harris, jet to Dubai for a summit on climate change’s impact caused by fossil fuels. Can you say oxymoronic? A column on the opinion page (”We will have to change our lifestyles”) suggests we should limit leisure travel to lessen our carbon footprint. If this sexagenarian can manage a Zoom meeting, one would think for the cultural elite this should be a no-brainer. Like Dad used to say, “Do as I say, not as I do.”

What, not how

The 2024 election

As American voters ponder whom they want to vote for in the upcoming presidential election, let’s keep it simple. Just listen to what President Joe Biden says and maybe not so much as to how he says it. Also listen to what former President Donald Trump says and maybe not so much as to how he says it. That should help you in your decision. Compassion, knowledge and wisdom are a must.
