Tarpon season is in full force and the bite is on fire from Tampa Bay, Boca Grande and down to Sanibel Island. Also known as silver king, tarpon is one of the most sought-after gamefish due to its combination of size, strength and ability to jump several feet out of the water during the fight. Anglers are forced to "bow" to the silver king to keep it from splitting the hook or breaking the line. Some of the best baits for tarpon are pass crabs, shrimp, live bait and, if they under the surface, cut mullet. This is a catch-and-release species and tarpon more than 40 inches must always remain in the water, so take that photo boat side.
