The San Francis Veterinary Hospital's second annual Mutt Strut was held Oct. 20 at Crews Lake Park. The event raised about $150 for the hospital's Angel Fund, which is used to help offset the cost of veterinary health treatments for financially-struggling pet owners. The Mutt Strut included a costume contest and a parade.Three prizes were awarded, donated by Merial, that included a year's worth of Heart Guard. Winners include: Herman, the basset hound sheriff, owned by Kathie and Tony Ludzader; Jasper, a chihuahua surgeon, owned by Amber and Mike Henk; and Zeke, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle rescue, owned by Austin and Sarah Hanson. After the costume contest, dogs and owners participated in a parade around the park. Students from the Bayonet Middle School band played the National Anthem: members included Owen Pigeon and Nathan Kollar on alto saxophone, Noah Ficarrotta on trumpet, Felix Morales on drums and Yoana Hidalgo on the flute. Girl Scouts Abbigaile Hochreiter, Ayden Neville and Ashley Ivanics from Troop 50401 carried the flag and led the parade, with the band members playing several upbeat pieces and marching behind them, followed by Commissioner Mike Wells and then all of the dogs and their owners. Donations of cash and unused medications to the San Francis Angel Fund are accepted year round. Visit sanfrancisvet.com or call (727) 233-6906 and (352) 848-0940.
