Briefs The Tampa Bay Times Newspaper in Education Science Fiction and Fantasy writing contest invites Tampa Bay-area high school students to submit original, unpublished short stories on the theme of American Steampunk. This is the 150th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad. On May 10, 1869, steam locomotives linked together east and west. Steampunk imagines a world where steam, not internal combustion or electricity, has remained the main form of power. The deadline to enter is May 10. The Grand Prize winner will receive: $100, Grand Prize plaque, a class trip to the Bay Area Renaissance Festival on School Day 2020; and an invitation to read the winning story at the 2019 Tampa Bay Times Festival of Reading. The winning story will be published on the Newspaper in Education and USF Humanities Institutes websites. For information and to enter, visit
