JFK visited Tampa four days before his fateful trip to Dallas

President John F. Kennedy’s November 18, 1963 visit, the city’s first from a sitting president, was so joyful in the moment, so bittersweet in memory.

President John F. Kennedy visited Tampa and took part in a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the first scheduled air service. Times photographers were on hand to document the day’s festivities.

President John F. Kennedy's motorcade travels down Lafayette Street where it splits off from Grand Central in Tampa during Kennedy's visit to the area on November 18, 1963. Just 4 days later, the nation will mourn Kennedy's death in Dallas. Portions of the two streets were renamed Kennedy Boulevard in 1964. This was the first visit ever made by a sitting president to the Bay area. (Times photo by Ron Wahl)
