Rays lost to Royals, 7-3

Jake Odorizzi's return to Kauffman Stadium didn't go well Thursday, as he lasted only five innings in the Rays 7-3 loss to the Royals.

Odorizzi, who made his big-league debut for Kansas City in Sept. 2012, got off to a good start, blanking the Royals for the first three innings.

But three singles led to two Royals runs in the fourth, and then things got ugly in the fifth as he allowed five runs - including a two-out three-run homer by Alex Gordon, the Royals first of the season.

The loss dropped the Rays to 5-5 as they headed off to Cincinnati for their first off-day of the season before opening a weekend series with the Reds.

And while Odorizzi had his issues, his teammates again didn't do much to help, held to three runs - on a leadoff home run by Desmond Jennings in the fourth, then tacking on a pair in the ninth - as their offense continues to struggle.

In their five losses, the Rays have scored only seven runs. They have been shut out in 65 of their 86 offensive innings. And six times in the 10 games they have gone into the ninth with one runs or less.
