The Rays are set for their first workout of the spring, with all 33 pitchers and seven catchers expected to be on hand. Many of the 31 position players have also checked into the Port Charlotte facility and will work out informally until they start on Friday,
Early workouts don't feature much action, the highlights usually being fundamental drills and pitchers throwing bullpen sessions.
Among those scheduled to throw today are three of their key starters - ace RHP Chris Archer, RHP Erasmo Ramirez and LHP Drew Smyly. Also on the posted schedule is RHP Alex Cobb, who is recovering from Tommy John elbow surgery, though he will only participate in drills and not throw off the mound.
The workouts starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Charlotte Sports Park (2300 El Jobean Road), lasting about 2hours. Admission and parking are free. Driving time from the bay area is 1½-2 hours. Suggested route: Interstate 75 South to Toledo Blade Road, go west 6½ miles to El Jobean Road (SR 776), go right 2 miles, stadium complex is on left. For more information: (941) 235-5025.
