Rays OF Steven Souza Jr. is headed to have his left hip examined by a specialist on Monday in Nashville with the potential for season-ending surgery.
Souza has been bothered since June by hip issues, missing 17 games then. He was examined then by Dr. Thomas Byrd and will see him again to decide on a course of action with several outcomes possible.
"I don't know what I'm going to hear,'' Souza said. "We're trying to figure out what the timetable is , if there is a need for some type procedure, on when to get it, whether to wait, whether to get it now or not get it at all.''
Souza has been able to play on the hip, though with occasional discomfort. He has been limited in weightlifting and other activities, and is concerned it may get worse.
"We know what's wrong - I have some kind of pinching going on caused by some irregular bone growth, and that's been going on since June,'' he said. "We've known it the whole year. Sometimes it never inflames back up and sometimes it comes right back. And that's kind of what the doctor said to me when I was there (in June), eventually is this is something that we need to deal with, just when is the question.''
Surgery this week is one of the options. "It's possible,'' Souza said.
Souza is in the lineup Sunday. To this point, he has hit .244 with 17 homers and 49 RBIs, while striking out 159 times, a rate of 34.3 percent of his plate appearances.
