Former East Lake High star Mason Cole, Michigan's resident iron man on the offensive line the last four years, was drafted late in Friday night's third round by the Arizona Cardinals.
"Going into the day, I knew I could be (drafted)," Cole, the 97th overall pick, said on a Cardinal conference call late Friday. "If I was going to be (drafted) it was going to be late in the day. Then I just got the phone call and…just beyond excited. It's unbelievable."
Cole (6-foot-4, 307 pounds), who played at both left tackle and center for the Wolverines, became the first true freshman offensive lineman in UM history to start a season opener. He made 51 consecutive starts for the Wolverines, and 51 consecutive starts at East Lake before that.
Though he played left tackle as a senior and earned second-team All-Big Ten recognition, he projects as a center in the NFL.
