RALEIGH, N.C. — Yanni Gourde was given a match penalty for a hit to the Jordan Staal’s head during the first period of Thursday’s game against Carolina. The match penalty means a player is ejected and also carries an automatic indefinite suspension “until the commissioner has ruled on the issue.”The play could be reviewed and ruled upon by morning if no further suspension is determined necessary. Otherwise, the league could have a phone or even in-person hearing with Gourde.Gourde made contact directly with Staal’s face with his shoulder on the play. Staal went to the dressing room after the hit, but returned for the second period.Ryan Callahan caught Staal up from behind as Gourde went for the hit. Staal was leaning forward to escape Callahan, hence how a 6-foot-4 forward ended up with his head at Gourde’s (5-foot-9 shoulder). It was absolutely a hit to the head. The play didn’t look like head hunting by Gourde, but it was avoidable.
