The Valspar Championship is on the move again.
Beginning next year, the PGA Tour event at Innisbrook will be played in late April, tournament director Tracy West confirmed. The Honda Classic, which has usually been the first tournament of the Florida swing in March, has been moved to March 18-21, 2021, which is the spot Valspar has held the past two years.
While the exact dates of next year’s tournament won’t be set until after this year’s tournament, Valspar will now fall a few weeks after the Masters instead of a few weeks before.
“We’re excited about the possibilities of being in April," West said. “This is something we’ve always embraced as a tournament. We’ve been in the fall, we’ve had various event dates, we’ve had different title sponsors. The beauty of this tournament is our adaptability. We love the challenge and embrace change. We think this could be a very unique, good situation for us."
The tournament began in 2000 as a fall event. It moved to early March in 2007. Last year the tournament was bumped back two weeks and is played after the Players Championship and before the Wold Golf Championships Match Play event.
The Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardnes, which wanted the change in order to bolster its field, will sit between the Players and Match Play starting next year.
West insisted that Valspar will not eventually be moved back to a fall event. This year’s tournament will be played March 19-22 on the Copperhead Course.
